A literal/prescriptive word for a protected core that gives the protector its purpose
I need a noun to complete this sentence:
"What we often hear as the immutable laws of nature would have something as essential as 'truth' as the ____."
I am not looking for words like "linchpin," "bedrock," or "foundation." I need a literal, prescriptive term (perhaps from law, biology, or engineering) that describes a specific dynamic:
The Protected: The word belongs in the center, being guarded or encapsulated by an outer system (the laws).
The Purpose: The outer system exists only to protect this inner thing. If you remove the protected thing, the outer system loses all meaning, function, or reason to exist.
Examples of the vibe I'm looking for are "payload," "corpus," or "ward," but I am looking for the absolute best fit. Any suggestions?
Top Answer/Comment:
I would suggest "res" or "kernel"
- Res, synonymous with corpus, is defined by Black's Law Dictionary as "an object, interest, or status, as opposed to a person." An article by SabiLaw extends the definition of res to the subject matter of litigation, a thing which the court has an inherent and abiding duty to preserve and protect. - Kernel, in botany, is the protected inner core of a seed, which the outer husk, shell, or pericarp exists to protect. Biology Online defines kernel as both "The essential part of a seed; all that is within the seed walls; the edible substance contained in the shell of a nut; hence, anything included in a shell, husk, or integument; as, the kernel of a nut." and "The central, substantial or essential part of anything; the gist; the core; as, the kernel of an argument."
