How did they shoot the bowling ball scene in The Big Lebowski?

The Big Lebowski (1998) features a number of surreal dream sequences in it. In one of them, the Dude is plastered by a bowling ball and obtains the viewpoint of a bowling ball as it rolls down the lane. How did they make this shot?

Roger Deakins, The Big Lebowski cinematographer, shows us how he pulled off the iconic bowling ball shot in The Big Lebowski:

Interviewer: The iconic "inside the bowling ball shot" in "The Big Lebowski," how did you do it?

Deakins: I think, if it was the one that you're talking about, we had the camera on a spit, quite literally, you know, a revolving spit on a dolly. So, somebody's pushing the dolly. The camera's over there, and then somebody's revolving the spit, so... It's very simple, really. That's the trick, isn't it?

Hopefully, you don't see what's behind it, you're just in it.

Interviewer: Did anyone on set know that it was gonna be such a phenomenon?

Deakins: No, definitely not. Everybody, including Joel and Ethan, thought it was really weird. It was weird, it was the strangest shoot. I mean, just in terms of what we were doin', it just seemed very bizarre. So, it was, no, it's gratifying that it's so successful, but how can you tell? I mean, "Lebowski" suddenly, what, comes on and now it's like, you know, this iconic movie, and yet "Hudsucker Proxy," I thought, was pretty great as well and that, you know. So, how do you tell? I don't know.

To achieve the point-of-view of a rolling bowling ball the Coen brothers mounted a camera "on something like a barbecue spit", according to Ethan, and then dollied it along the lane. The challenge for them was figuring out the relative speeds of the forward motion and the rotating motion. CGI was used to create the vantage point of the thumb hole in the bowling ball.
