Near the end of Disclosure Day, Noah Scanlon (the villain) played by Colin Firth, simply gives up and lets his sworn enemies win. Noah is 100% obsessed with preventing the world from finding out about aliens and will stop at nothing--including murder and mayhem--to do it. And yet during the final showdown between the good guys and the bad guys, Noah literally sits down in a chair and lets the good guys win.
What?!
I have never seen anything like this before. Villains don't give up--they either win or die trying. They let nothing stand in their way.
There is no indication of a change of heart or massive character arc. Sure, he sees an illusion of his wife, which rattles (and maybe even softens) him, but it's clear that after that he continues his obsessive mission to stop (and kill if he has to!) Margaret and her allies. And then when the big showdown moment occurs, he just slumps down in a chair without a word, lets the good guys win, and lets the alien appear on national TV.
This makes no sense. Can someone explain it to me? Is it just lazy writing? Or is there some grand secret or message that I'm missing?
