Old tragic romantic film involving a handsome young couple and a rendezvous at a...

I saw a film in the 70's on UK TV that had a tragic ending. To summarise:

• Possibly a European romantic drama.
• Probably made in the 1950s or 1960s - possibly black and white.
• A handsome young couple.
• Lots of cafés and city streets.
• The ending hinges on a rendezvous at a railway station.
• They BOTH arrive at the station, but each walk around opposite sides of an obstacle (a luggage cart, kiosk, stacked baggage trolley, etc.), never seeing one another.
• The woman boards the train believing the man never arrived, and the film ends tragically.

Any ideas? I've been searching for this for 45 years! Thanks in advance.
